Dr Mohammad Anwar Husnoo was first elected as a Member of the National Assembly for Port-Louis Maritime and Port-Louis East in 2005. He was re-elected in December 2014 when he was appointed as Minister of Local Government. In January 2017, Dr Husnoo was assigned to take over the office of Minister of Health and Quality of Life. Since Nov 12, 2019, Dr Husnoo was appointed as Vice Prime Minister, Minister of Local Government and Disaster Risk Management.
Dr Husnoo is a qualified Paediatrician. He studied medicine at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland. Following his graduation in 1977, he practiced in various hospitals in the United Kingdom namely Burnley, Liverpool and Leicester before returning to the University of Aberdeen as Registrar in Paediatrics. Between 1981 and 1982, Dr Anwar Husnoo was appointed as Clinical Tutor in Paediatrics at the Medical School, University of Aberdeen.
Dr Husnoo passed his MBChB exams in 1977 and the diploma in Child's Health (DCh) from London in 1979. In 1981, he obtained the Membership of the Royal College of Physician (MRCP), United Kingdom.
Dr Anwar Husnoo came back to Mauritius in 1982 and started practising at the Dr A. G. Jeetoo Hospital before joining Victoria Hospital as Registrar Specialist. In 1985, Dr Husnoo left for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to work as Consultant Paediatrician. In 1989, he returned to Mauritius to work as Registrar Specialist / Senior Specialist at the Ministry of Health and Quality of Life. In 2000, Dr Husnoo left the government sector to join politics.
From 2001 to 2005, Dr Husnoo has served as Councillor to the Municipal City Council of Port-Louis where he was also a member of the Health Committee. In 2005, he was elected as a member of the National Assembly and was also appointed as a member of The Parliamentary Committee on Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC). Dr Husnoo also took an active part in the development of his constituency, especially in the health and education sector. He has also worked as a Paediatric Specialist in the private sector from 2000 to 2014.
Dr Anwar Husnoo is married with four children. His main hobby is reading and practicing regular walk.
